Peter Cua Shuttles
The following shuttles are imported to the USA by The Loopy Lacer, from Peter Cua, of The Philippines.
The shuttles called “Horn” are made from the horn of the Carabao, a domesticated water buffalo, used as a beast of burden and farm animal in the Philippines. The carabao is NOT an endangered species. Certification and permits accompanied the shipment.
In its natural form, the horn of the carabao is usually black, with some grain occasionally showing. The “brown” Horn shuttles are in fact made from black horn that has undergone a bleaching process. The resulting color resembles the “artificial tortoise shell” color that I have seen in some older tatting shuttles. The “Albino” horn shuttles come from albino water buffalo. This is actually not as uncommon as might first be believed. The natural grain of the horn material shows up more vividly in the bleached and albino colors. Because the animals fight with their horns, some resultant “flaws” may exist. This is proof that these are made of truly natural horn.
The shuttles called “Coconut” are made from the shell of the coconut and not from the wood of the tree. The natural fibers in the coconut shell make for a very unique “grain” in the shuttles. It would probably be safe to say that no two are exactly alike.
It is also important to point out that these shuttles are made entirely by hand and, therefore, the measurements given are approximate.
